Java 10.6 Update 5

Had to re-install 10.6.8 combo

I usually like to install combo updates on my iMac.
After downloading 10.6.8 combo the screen of my iMac went black and I had to turn it off (using the power button).


After that, although it looked like everything was fine, I successfully re-installed 10.6.8.

10.6.8 is available

I prefer the combo update.

Mac OS X 10.6.7 is out

I am now downloading the combo update (size: 1Gb).

Re-installing 10.6.6 combo

I got my iMac from service yesterday. What I did first was a full system recovery using my Time Machine backup :)
The thing is that Finder and Safari were not working properly – they crashed many times. Also, Quick Look was not working at all – not the usual Mac experience.


I googled a little, and I found that re-installing the Mac OS X 10.6.6 combo update may help. I did that and everything looks fine now – I hope it will stay fine.

How to restart a service in Snow Leopard

The following commands should be executed from the UNIX prompt (as root!)


$ sudo launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist
$ sudo launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.syslogd.plist

My LaTeX installation is not working!

I am using LaTeX (with TextMate) both for writing Mathematical equations and typesetting books.

I am using the Macports version of LaTeX but (I think) after updating to Snow Leopard my LaTeX stopped working!

Now is the time to fix it.

About my new iMac :)

Formatting my MBP

In a while I am going to format my MBP in order to give it to its new owner. I did not intend to give it so soon, as I have it less that one year and a half, but when the new iMacs came, well, I just wanted one of them!

The MBP served me well and reliably but, as both a photographer and a programmer, I really need the extra speed (I will get the 3.06Ghz version) and screen of the new 27'' iMacs.

Hopefully, I will get my new iMac before Christmas.
